Fax to (703) 834-8187. Send the chart notes with the referral so our team can triage urgency before the patient is on the phone.

Triage by Urgency
Most red or irritated eyes are benign. The task is catching the few that threaten sight within hours. Sort the complaint into one tier, act at that speed, and call us first for anything urgent or unclear.
Chemical splash: irrigate immediately, then call. Sudden painless vision loss, a new curtain or shadow, or a hard, painful red eye with halos and nausea. Suspected open globe: shield the eye and send to the ED.
New floaters or flashes with vision still intact, blunt trauma without an open globe, a corneal infection or keratitis that keeps worsening, or a red, painful eye in a contact-lens wearer.
A chronic red eye that has stayed stable for weeks, a stye or chalazion, or a painless bright-red patch (subconjunctival hemorrhage). Reassure the patient and schedule a routine visit.

What Happens After You Refer
You keep the relationship. We handle the episode of care, document it, and send the patient back to you with a clear picture of what was found and what comes next.

Triage and scheduling
Our team reviews the referral, confirms urgency, and books the appointment. Urgent cases are triaged the same day rather than dropped into the next open slot.

Evaluation
A comprehensive work-up with the diagnostics the case calls for, from dilated retinal exam and gonioscopy to visual fields, OCT, and corneal or wavefront mapping.

Treatment or onward routing
If it is within our scope, we treat it here. If it belongs with a retina surgeon or another subspecialist, we say so and coordinate the handoff instead of sitting on it.

Report back and return
You get timely post-visit reporting, and the patient returns to you for ongoing management with clear instructions on what to watch for.
Who Sees Your Patients
Your referrals are seen by two board-certified ophthalmologists, not a rotating roster of providers.
Dr. Jacqueline D. Griffiths founded NewView Eye Center in 1999 and has been in private practice since 1994. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2015, a Top Ophthalmologist in Washingtonian and Northern Virginia Magazine, and an oral board examiner for new ophthalmology graduates. She previously served as Ophthalmology Section Chief of Reston Hospital's Department of Surgery and as Chief of Ophthalmology at both Reston Ambulatory Surgical Center and Loudoun Hospital.
Dr. Claiborne M. Callahan is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, trained at the University of Virginia School of Medicine with residency at Tulane. He has performed thousands of cataract, laser, glaucoma, and eyelid plastic surgeries, and was named Best Eye Doctor in Loudoun County by Leesburg Today.

We offer prompt appointments and same-day triage for urgent cases. Call the office directly rather than using the form so the case reaches a person immediately, and tell the scheduler it is urgent.
Yes. Call either office anytime for a curbside opinion or to confirm urgency before you send the patient. If a case belongs somewhere else, we would rather tell you on the phone than after an appointment.

Yes. We provide timely post-visit reporting and return your patients to you for ongoing management. Co-management is how the practice has worked with referring physicians and optometrists since 1999.
Surgical retina, including detachment repair, vitrectomy, and anti-VEGF injections. Advanced surgical glaucoma such as trabeculectomy or tube shunts, and complex glaucoma. Corneal transplants. Reconstructive eyelid and orbital surgery. We also do not perform pediatric exams. Everything else in the list above is handled on site.
Most major insurances, including the VSP network, Medicare, and private plans. CareCredit, FSA, and HSA are available for elective procedures. Coverage varies by plan, so have the patient call the office for specifics before the visit.
