There are reliable, widely available options for viewing an eclipse safely, and knowing which ones to use makes all the difference. Whether you prefer direct viewing through a proper filter or an indirect method, the right approach protects your eyes completely.

The only safe way to look directly at the sun during an eclipse is through solar filters that meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. These are sold as eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers and are widely available from reputable retailers and astronomical organizations.

Before using eclipse glasses, inspect them carefully each time. Discard any pair that shows scratches, punctures, tears, or peeling film. Damaged filters can allow concentrated sunlight through to your eyes even if the rest of the glasses appear intact.

  • Look for the ISO 12312-2 label printed on the glasses
  • Confirm the manufacturer name and address are included
  • Purchase only from vendors recommended by recognized astronomical organizations
  • Replace any glasses that look worn or damaged before the event

Counterfeit eclipse glasses can look identical to certified ones but fail to block enough radiation. When in doubt, choose indirect viewing instead.

If you do not have certified eclipse glasses, indirect projection is a completely safe alternative. With this method, you keep your back to the sun and watch a projected image of the eclipse on a flat surface in front of you.

A simple pinhole projector can be made with two pieces of cardboard. Punch a small hole in one piece, hold it up so sunlight passes through the hole from behind you, and let the image fall onto the second piece of cardboard held in front. The result is a small but clear projection of the eclipse that you can watch without any risk.

You can also look for natural pinhole projectors. During an eclipse, the gaps between leaves in a tree canopy project crescent-shaped images of the partially covered sun onto the ground below, giving you a safe and striking view of what is happening overhead.

Some viewing methods that seem reasonable are actually unsafe, and it is important to know which items to avoid entirely. Ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, do not block sufficient ultraviolet and infrared radiation and should never be used to look directly at the sun.

  • Regular sunglasses, including stacked pairs
  • Homemade filters made from smoked glass or exposed film
  • Unfiltered camera lenses, telescopes, or binoculars
  • Car windshields, which block some UV but not enough to protect the retina

Viewing through an unfiltered camera, telescope, or smartphone while wearing eclipse glasses is also dangerous. Concentrated solar rays can destroy the glasses filter in an instant and injure your eye. These devices require a proper solar filter attached directly to the front lens before you look through them.

Recognizing Solar Eye Damage After an Eclipse

Because the retina has no pain receptors, solar retinopathy can develop without any warning during the exposure itself. Knowing what symptoms to look for and when to seek care can make a meaningful difference in your outcome.

Solar retinopathy symptoms commonly appear several hours after unsafe sun exposure rather than immediately. The delay is one of the reasons eclipse-related eye injuries are often underestimated.

  • A dark, gray, or blind spot near the center of your vision
  • Blurred or distorted central vision
  • Trouble distinguishing colors or changes in how colors appear
  • Straight lines appearing wavy or bent

Mild cases may produce a small central blind spot that gradually fades over weeks. More severe damage can affect your ability to read, drive, or recognize faces, and it may not fully resolve. The severity depends on how long you looked at the sun and how much radiation reached your retina.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive scan that creates detailed cross-sectional images of the retinal layers, can reveal disruption at the exact site of a solar burn.

Early imaging may show subtle changes even before you notice visual symptoms, which is why our team recommends scheduling an exam within one to two days of any unprotected solar exposure, regardless of how your vision currently feels. Fundus photography may also be used to document and monitor the macula, the central area of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.

Currently, there is no proven medical or surgical treatment that can repair retinal cells damaged by solar exposure. The retina must heal on its own, and recovery is monitored over weeks to months with follow-up exams.

Many patients with mild solar retinopathy experience meaningful improvement in central vision over time. Severe cases can result in a lasting central blind spot. No eye drop, oral medication, or laser procedure has been shown to speed retinal recovery from solar burns, which is why prevention with certified filters is so critical before and during every eclipse event.

This protects both the device and your eyes if you glance at the screen.

Children need the same ISO 12312-2 certified glasses as adults. The fit matters more with children than with adults because glasses that slide down or feel loose may not provide full coverage. An adult should supervise children throughout the entire eclipse, since young children may remove glasses out of curiosity or wear them incorrectly without realizing it.

Authentic certified glasses will display the ISO 12312-2 standard, the manufacturer name, and contact information printed on the frame or packaging. Purchase from vendors listed by reputable astronomical organizations rather than from unknown online sellers. A practical test: when wearing the glasses indoors, you should not be able to see anything other than the sun or an extremely bright light source. If ordinary indoor lighting is visible through the lenses, the glasses do not meet the safety standard.
