Following aftercare instructions closely in the hours and days after your treatment protects your results and minimizes side effects. The steps below are straightforward and take very little effort, but they make a meaningful difference in how the product settles.
Stay upright and avoid lying down or bending forward for at least four hours after your injections. This helps prevent the neurotoxin, the active ingredient in BOTOX Cosmetic, from migrating to muscles that were not targeted during treatment, including the small muscle that lifts your upper eyelid.
Do not touch, rub, press, or massage the treated areas during this time. Even gentle pressure can shift the product away from where our eye doctors placed it, which can cause unwanted effects such as temporary eyelid drooping. Mild tightness, tingling, or heaviness in the treated area is normal and simply means the product is beginning to take effect.
Heat and increased blood flow can cause the product to spread beyond its intended location, so avoiding activities that raise your body temperature is important for the first day after treatment.
Staying well-hydrated with water and keeping your routine calm for the rest of the day is the simplest thing you can do to support a smooth recovery.
Bruising, mild swelling, and tenderness at injection sites are the most common temporary effects of BOTOX Cosmetic. They are not a sign that anything went wrong and typically resolve within a few days.
For swelling, apply cold compresses in 10-minute intervals, always using a soft cloth between the cold pack and your skin. For a mild headache in the first day or two, acetaminophen is a safe option. Some patients find that arnica gel or supplements help reduce bruising, but please check with our team before applying any new topical product to or near the injection sites.
Understanding the normal timeline for results helps you know what to expect and when something may need our attention. Most patients move through this process without any complications, but being informed helps you feel confident and prepared.
Subtle muscle relaxation may appear within three to four days of your treatment. Full results develop at around two weeks, which is when our eye doctors may schedule a follow-up to evaluate your response and make any fine-tuning adjustments if needed.
Slight unevenness between the two sides of your face in the first week is common and is not a cause for concern. The product may take effect at slightly different rates on each side. By two weeks, both sides should look balanced and natural. Results typically last about 3 to 4 months, after which you will notice a gradual return of muscle movement as the neurotoxin wears off.
Serious complications from BOTOX Cosmetic are rare, but it is important to know what to watch for. Contact us right away if you experience eyelid drooping (called ptosis), difficulty swallowing, changes in vision, difficulty breathing, or muscle weakness that extends beyond the treatment area. These symptoms may indicate unintended spread of the neurotoxin and need prompt evaluation.
Seek emergency care immediately if you develop widespread rash, itching, wheezing, or swelling of the tongue or throat, as these may signal a severe allergic reaction. Increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, or pus at injection sites in the days following treatment may indicate infection, and you should contact our office promptly if you notice these signs.
A well-performed BOTOX Cosmetic treatment softens wrinkles while keeping your facial expressions natural and expressive. You should still be able to move your face freely, just without the deepest lines appearing when you do.
If noticeable asymmetry persists at two weeks, contact us for a follow-up assessment. A small touch-up injection can often address the difference quickly and comfortably.
Below are answers to some of the practical questions our patients ask most often about BOTOX Cosmetic care before and after treatment.
We recommend waiting at least four hours before applying makeup to any treated area. The small injection points need time to close before they come into contact with cosmetics or applicators. After four hours, apply makeup gently using clean brushes or applicators to lower the risk of introducing bacteria to the injection sites. Avoid rubbing or pressing the skin during application.
Flying the same day is generally considered safe, but cabin pressure changes and the dehydration that often comes with air travel can increase swelling and discomfort. When possible, scheduling your treatment the day before travel rather than the day of is a practical way to reduce this risk. If you do fly the same day, drink plenty of water and skip alcohol during the flight.
Light walking is fine on the day of your treatment, but vigorous exercise should wait at least 24 hours. Activities that significantly raise your heart rate and body temperature, such as running, weightlifting, hot yoga, or cycling, can increase blood flow in a way that promotes product migration away from the targeted muscles. Giving your body a full day of rest supports a more predictable result.
If you notice persistent asymmetry at the two-week mark, contact our office to schedule a follow-up evaluation. Minor unevenness can often be corrected with a small touch-up injection to the side that needs more effect. It is important not to massage or press on the area yourself in an attempt to even things out, as this can shift the product in unpredictable ways. Our eye doctors can assess your results and recommend the appropriate next step.
We advise waiting at least 48 hours before any facial treatment that involves pressure, heat, or chemical application over the treated area. Facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and massage can all displace the product before it has fully settled into the targeted muscles. If you have a specific treatment scheduled, let our team know so we can advise on the safest timing for your situation.
Many patients receive BOTOX Cosmetic safely while taking prescription medications, but certain drugs, particularly those that affect muscle function or blood clotting, require extra consideration. Always share your complete medication list with our eye doctors before treatment, including any recent changes. This allows our team to personalize your care and flag any interactions that might affect your treatment plan or aftercare.
