Glass lenses have largely been replaced in modern optical practice by plastic and polycarbonate. While high-index glass can reach very high refractive indices and create extremely thin lenses, the material is heavy and more prone to shattering than plastic alternatives.

Most optical practices today stock high-index plastic rather than glass because the combination of thinness, light weight, and safety suits everyday wear better for the vast majority of patients.

Caring for Your High-Index Lenses

High-index lenses, particularly those with anti-reflective coatings, require consistent and careful cleaning to maintain their clarity and longevity. Good habits from the start protect your investment.

Rinse your lenses with lukewarm water first to float away dust and debris before touching the surface. Add a small drop of lotion-free dish soap, rub gently with clean fingers, rinse thoroughly, and dry with a soft microfiber cloth.

  • Avoid paper towels and tissues, which can leave fine scratches on coated surfaces
  • Avoid wiping with a shirttail or clothing, which can trap grit picked up during the day
  • Always rinse before wiping to avoid dragging debris across the lens
